SERVER CERTIFICATES

A server certificate serves to certify public keys of users and organizations with a valid e-mail address. A server key is used to encrypt a unique symmetrical session key which then secures all communication between server and client. In addition to this, the server certificate confirms that the server key really does belong to the organization or assures the individual or end-user (e.g. buyer) that he has established secure communication with an organisation. This protocol for safe data transfer is called the SSL or TLS protocol (Secure Socket Layer or Transport Layer Security).
